Who Am I:

I'm the former systems director of NICAR . I now work for the Associated Press in New York as a data junkie/news data editor on their special assignment team. I also train at NICAR training seminars, act as an advisor/consultant on technical matters and generally support the cause anyway I can.  This spring, I will also be acting as an adjunct professor of journalism at NYU teaching a course on computer-assisted reporting.

Useful Sites:

• InterNIC's searchable URL site allows you to find out who is behind that URL.

Database Sites (download raw data):

• Tons of FAA data including searchable tail number and Service Difficulty Report pages.
• Federal Railroad Administration Accident data can be downloaded from this site.
• Through RTK Net, you can get the Toxic Release Inventory, Home Mortgage Data and other data sets.
• The Bureau of the Census has demographic data, mapping files and a myriad of other useful data on their site and all of it is searchable and downloadable. Especially useful are the BOC's population estimates since the last census by city, county and state.
• A ton of agricultural databases can be found at the USDA gopher site including crop yield and economic data.
• Some useful education databases can be found at the Department of Education' gopher site.

Data Search and Visualization sites:

• The MIT's AI lab site has some great data visualization tools. You can plot the performance of a stock or download the data.
  
• My favorite search site. This site has searchable databases of GAO reports, the Federal Register, the Congressional Record, the US budget and other neat sources. Really cool.

PC related sites:

• Searchable phone list of PC related companies including BBSs.
• A very detailed and fun chronology of PCs.
• This site contains a searchable dictionary of computing terms and can be very useful.
